"The Gathering"
My fascination with birds' eggs led me to begin a still life in earth tones that featured the eye-catching spotted quail eggs. My studio has a number of birds' eggs of various types, sizes, and colors. Recently, I experimented with watercolors (for the first time since college) and my subject matter was quail eggs, which were a delight to paint. I gathered together some of my earth-toned props ... a wooden Shaker box, a clay lidded jar, and a metal vessel with handle, and finally - a small ceramic bowl. Four larger eggs completed the scene and added a touch of color.
"The Gathering" of these items on a simple folded cloth needed only the addition of a twig with three leaves to complete the set up.
This painting is in oil on a Archival RayMar panel - the substrate that I have enjoyed painting on the most lately.
"The Gathering" is framed in a lovely shade of light beige that very closely follows the color of the fabric under the items in the painting. This frame does a marvelous job of continuing the painting out more than 2" which avoids the jarring aspect of a frame that does not aid in the overall mood or look of the painting itself. As an artist, I prefer my frames to somewhat disappear so that the artwork takes center stage and is noticed first, and I choose them based primarily on this preference. [A good frame shouldn't call attention to itself, unless it's on a mirror.]
