"Garden Party"

GARDEN PARTY
GARDEN PARTY

"Garden Party" ~ Still life of colorful ceramic flower pots all piled up together. I was rushing into the grocery store when I saw a display outside of colorful ceramic flower pots. They were stacked on top of each other and were in a bit of disarray due to people picking them up and placing them back again. I decided to shoot one photo with my phone's camera, despite the blinding sunlight, and then dashed into the store. Once I was home and out of the sunlight, I looked at the one photo of the flower pots and thought maybe this could be a fun project in pastel.

The original photo had the pots arranged by color: blue pots in a line, red pots next to the green pots, etc. This was a little too predictable for me, so I decided to mix things up a bit and challenge myself to rearrange the pots and choose my own colors. I would guess that out of all the pots featured, only two are the original colors that were in the photo I took that day. The challenge for me was to use my past experience painting ceramic pieces to remember how pots reflect the color of the objects right next to them. Using colored pencils, I drew on paper the color arrangements I thought might work best, and made note of what color each pot "saw" (or reflected) so that the scene would ring true.

With pastel, working in these bright, happy colors is a painter's dream! What fun to grab for the most brilliant and saturated colors in my collection of pastels. It was a celebration of color, hence the name: "Garden Party."

"Garden Party" has sold.
